A Rushed Breakfast

Thursday, 8 a.m.

Robert : (yelling up the stairs) Kids, come to breakfast!
Jim : There aren't any shirts in my drawer!
Louise : (to Robert) His clothes are all in the laundry room. I think some of them are clean, in the dryer.
Robert : Come on down, Jim, you can get the clean clothes later.
Louise : (bringing butter to the table) Do you know if there is any strawberry jam left, Robert?

[Breakfast table]

Everyone arrives at the kitchen table. Jim has no shirt and Becky's shirt is on backwards. On the table are cereal boxes, a jam jar and today's newspaper. Louise brings a couple of pieces of toast.

Louise : Could you pour me some coffee, please, dear?
Robert : Of course. Who would like some orange juice?
Becky : I would.
Jim : Me too, and can you pass the butter? [Cereal]

Jim spreads butter on his toast and Becky helps herself to some cornflakes.

Becky : Is today my class trip?
Louise : (looking up from the paper) Oh, that's right, we have to pack you a lunch!
Robert : Well, you don't have much time. . . .
Becky : I can do it, if you tell me where the juice boxes are.
Jim : (pushing his chair away from the table) Come on, Becky, we have to go soon. One of my friends, Mark, is waiting at the corner so we can walk together.

[Lunchbox ingredients]
Jim goes to find a clean shirt. Becky and Louise stand up together to get Becky's lunch made quickly. Robert picks up another section of the newspaper and starts eating grapefruit. Half of the grapefruit is left for someone else.

Robert : Does every breakfast have to be so hectic?
