Jim's Snack

[Janet's house]

Wednesday, 3:30 p.m.

Jim knows that on Wednesday afternoons he can expect Mark's mother to pick them up. He and Mark are waiting outside the school, surprised that she hasn't come yet.

Jim : What do you think happened to your mom, Mark?
Mark : I don't know. Oh, I remember. She probably went shopping.

A gold sedan pulls up in front of them, and Mark sees that it's his mother.

Mark : (opening the back door) Let's go, Jim. Hi, Mom.
Janet : Hi, guys. Sorry I'm late. There was a longer line than usual at the supermarket.
Jim : I don't mind. If you bought food, I'm happy.
Janet : I'll bet you are. I'll need some help putting away the groceries, though.
Mark : No problem.

Janet pulls into the driveway and lets the boys into the house. As she carries in the shopping bags, they peek inside them and start pulling things out and putting them on the counter. [Janet's bowl of fruit]
Mark : Oh boy, look at all that fruit!
Janet : I got apples, pears, and peaches. And I even got strawberries, as a special treat.
Mark : Great! Look, Jim, cranberry juice! Cheddar cheese! Chocolate chip cookies!
Janet : (Washing some fruit) Hold on a minute. You can have cheese and crackers or cookies but not both.
Jim : Fruit's what I want. I'm starving.
Janet : Let's make sure to put away the food before snack time. There's frozen food in this bag.
Jim : Wow, ice cream!
Janet : Yes, put that in the freezer please, along with these peas and meat.

Janet hides the cookies and puts out the fruit and the cheese and crackers. Amazing how much these boys eat, she thinks.

After they have eaten as much as they are allowed, the boys go down to the basement to play.
