Carl Moves In

Wednesday, 11 a.m.

Carl Snyder is moving into a place of his own for the first time. There are stacks of boxes in the room that will be both his bedroom and his livingroom. He figures that if he unpacks the boxes of kitchen things first, he'll start to feel settled.

[Cupboard]

He arranges his drinking glasses in a cupboard with a glass door. Just then the telephone rings from the floor of the next room.

Carl : Hello?[Listen]
Mike : Hi, Carl? Are you too busy to go out tonight?
Carl : Well, I can't exactly party, because I have a class tomorrow morning.
Mike : What I had in mind was dinner at a new restaurant I have discovered.
Carl : Dinner out! Now, that's a good idea, considering. . .
Mike : Right, you probably can't even find a pot to boil water in at the moment.
Carl : Yeah, it's kind of like that. What's the restaurant?
Mike : El Águila, at 25th Street and Belmont Avenue.
Carl : OK, what time?
Mike : How about seven o'clock?
Carl : Sure, see you then.
Mike : Bye.

After a morning spent unpacking, Carl walks to the newsstand around the corner from his new building. He glances at the magazine covers and then sees the newspaper rack.

Newsstand Cashier : Good morning.[Listen]
Carl : Hi, how's it going? (he picks up a local newspaper) How much is it?
Newsstand Cashier : Fifty cents. Enjoy!
Carl : Thanks.
